Underground

Drops of water hit the ground
Regular and rythmic
Sharp sounds echoing hollowly
-Like metallic heartbeats
Grinding on my nerves
Its monotony not quite broken
By my shuffling feet
As I slowly and painstakingly
Fumble forward along a path
Dimly illuminated by shadowy ghost-lights.
Sometimes I think I hear whispering
From branching entrances I pass
-Soft breezes of unintelligible words.
Small, cold reptiles dart across my feet
I shudder at their touch.
I have been here for a very long time, now
And still there is no sign
Of a way out of this cave.
I wonder sometimes what I am doing here
I think I mislaid the answer
Somewhere on the path behind me
As I am still in the dark...
